Toronto’s Distillery District, the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian industrial buildings in North America, is always a special spot to visit but it’s transformed into something truly magical for the holiday season during the Toronto Christmas Market.
Built amongst the site of the former Gooderham & Worts Distillery, the largest alcohol distiller in Canada at one point, the district is a throwback to 19th century Toronto when the town was chockfull of industrial Victorianism, most of which has been regrettably demolished over the decades to disrepair and development.
Today the 1300-acre district boasts a large collection of theatres, cafes, restaurants, bars, and independent retail outlets as well as nearly 20 galleries, all tucked within the historic architecture that warrants a visit in and of itself.
For the past decade the Distillery District has hosted a European style Christmas market, which is a delight to both residents and tourists alike. Set against a picturesque backdrop of the Victorian architecture donned with twinkling lights, the Toronto Christmas Market welcomes visitors to stroll the rows of stalls along the cobblestone lanes, selling all sorts of holiday fare. The bricks-and-mortar stores within the district are also open to peruse if you can’t find the perfect gift at the stalls, or if you just need a little warm up.
An abundance of food and drink options, many reflective of traditional German fare, take the Christmas market experience to the next level. A glühwein (mulled wine) or Hot Toddy is an instant source of warmth on a cold evening and best enjoyed huddled around the open fire pits set up throughout the area. Food stalls make a range of hearty snacks such as schnitzel on a bun, turkey leg, currywurst, and gourmet grilled cheese.
In years past, weekends were uncomfortably busy with the laneways so jammed it was difficult to walk at times. Starting this year, there is a $5 entrance fee on Saturdays and Sundays to ensure Toronto Christmas Market crowds are manageable. You can purchase tickets online in advance or buy on site. Tuesdays to Fridays are free, the market is closed on Mondays.
