I’m not one for resorts. They’re too busy, the food is mediocre, they’re awash with the kind of tourists I try to avoid, and for the same price, I could spend a month backpacking, well…anywhere. It’s a case I’ve built for friends time and again. The reality behind all that talk, however, is someone who (token childhood Disney trip aside) only recently vacationed at his first resort. So it is with this short photo post, I eat my words, and offer a much needed apology for my paradoxically pretentious backpacker attitude.
As my travel companion outlined in her recent article “Atlantis Paradise Island: Six Reasons to Get Back On The Beaten Path“, our pre-holiday trip to Atlantis in Nassau, the Bahamas, was quiet, delicious, affordable, and, for the first time in recent memory, completely relaxing. Perhaps most importantly, it gave us a quick escape from what’s been one of the most bitterly cold Canadian winters in recent memory. It was, all around, unlike the picture I had painted of resort vacationing.
While I don’t think I would substitute my more remote, and far less opulent, trips for Mount Gay-filled beach coconuts, it certainly won’t be my last resort. Here are a few photos of the property to give you a feel.
Make your next trip the best one.

Lovely pics..
Thanks Harine!
I’ve never been to Atlantis, or the Bahamas for that matter. I tend to steer away from super crowded tourist areas, but these pictures look beautiful! Might have to reconsider if I ever make that jump from Florida where I live to the islands. 🙂
Hi Amy – Thanks for the comment. I’m in the same boat (as indicated above). We went in early-mid December just before what I imagine would have been a crazy Christmas rush so the resort was quiet enough to relax and find an empty spot on one of the beaches or by a pool, while still having full restaurants/bars etc. With that said, I could imagine the resort would have a very different vibe during the busy months. We also spent some time off the resort, checking out some local spots we found out about online, which was definitely a highlight and something I’d recommend. I’ll post a follow up in the next week with some great off the resort recommendations for Nassau as well. Cheers, and thanks again!
I hold my hand up, I’m a resort snob, but your photos look very nice and there must be decent places out there, it’s just a case of knowing which ones!
Wow JP, great stories and pictures!!
Thanks Jess! In the off season it was actually really quite and great for anyone who likes to walk around with a camera.
